Introduction

Despite its size and level of complexity, Bakersfield seems to hold on to its small, farm-town roots. Bakersfield’s atmosphere is friendly, its culture is diverse and its future is bright. As one of the most affordable regions in California, more and more homebuyers are taking a look at all that Bakersfield has to offer.

The city earned its name from an early settler, Colonel Thomas Baker. Baker grew alfalfa on a small parcel of land – a perfect amenity for travelers who needed to feed their animals between southern and northern California destinations. Word spread among travelers about Baker, and his property came to be known as Baker’s Field. When Baker was given the responsibility of surveying an official township, it was natural choice to call the new town Bakersfield.

From these humble roots, Bakersfield has become California’s 11th largest city (as of May, 2005). The community offers ample economic opportunity, strong educational facilities and diverse, affordable housing options.
